MSD (Managed Software Distribution) at the University of Georgia

This is the site where the University System of Georgia gets Educational discounts on Software. Faculty and staff may NOT order directly from MSD. All orders must be purchased via Purchase Order (PO) through your unit. If you wish to buy educational software at discount for home use, see Academic Super Store below.

Please read the order info section.

Educational Discount Software Sites

Anyone who works in education or is a student may purchase software from the Academic Super Store or the Campus Tech sites. You will need to supply some form of ID (proof that you work in education, or are a student) when you purchase from this company.

OpenOffice

Open office is a complete, free "Office Suite" like Microsoft Office. It is available for PC, Macintosh, and other platforms. OpenOffice may be distributed freely to students. The files that are created are compatible with Microsoft Office products and WordPerfect. There are two versions available: version 1.1.4 (stable - bug free) and version 1.9+ (beta - still under development). The beta version is "probably" stable enough to work well, but don't quote me!

Web Hosting Companies

These companies offer Web hosting for a fee. You should compare features of the sites to see which one best suits your needs. I cannot attest to the reliability of these sites, so caveat emptor! I have used Dreamhost for several years, and have been satisfied, but the service is a little expensive compared to others. If you have a bad experience with one of these companies, please let me know! You should read the "Gotchas" before making a decision on a hosting site.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is software that is used to upload and download pages from a Web server. There are quite a few of free programs available, but you can also pay for more robust versions. The free stuff is good enough for most jobs.

WinSCP (PC)

WinSCP is secure FTP software that Georgia Southern uses.

Filezilla (PC)

FileZilla is an FTP program similar to WS_FTP, but with a better user interface. If you know how to use WS_FTP, you'll find this program easy to use. It supports secure connections, which means that your password and content will not be vulnerable to snoopers when you upload or download. When you go to the page below, you will need to scroll down a little before you see the download link.

Fetch (Mac)

This is an FTP program for Macintosh computers. You may apply for a free license to Fetch for the following: Use by a student or employee of a public or accredited private school, college, university or academy; use by a student or parent engaged in home-schooling; use by volunteers or employees of a tax-exempt charity, to further the work of that charity. Use by government agencies or government research laboratories does not qualify.

Winzip is no longer free. I did a search for free versions, and came up with the following. These zip utilities allow you to "zip" many files into one for easy transfer across the internet. This utility is helpful when you need to upload many files into WebCT.

Comment Box for Online Form

You can add a comment box to your page so visitors to your Web site can send you comments and questions from your Web site. This is handy when your visitor does not have access to an email program on the computer they are using. To set up the form, simply copy the code in the file below, and paste it into your Web page where you want the comment box to appear. There is a supporting file that you must create to make the form work that will be in another file. There are instructions on how to do this in the file below. If you need help with this, contact me at the Center for Excellence in teaching by sending me an email or using the comment box on the first page of my site. The form is at the bottom of the page.

Assigning a Drive Letter for your Jump Drive

Jump Drives, also known as memory sticks and flash drives, are relatively new on the scene. As with any new technology, there are issues. One issue for the jump drive is that the computer does not recognize the device, therefore not assigning a drive letter to it. You can manually assign a drive letter by following this tutorial.

Plagiarism Detection Tools

There are plagiarism detection tools that students and professors may use to look for signs of plagiarism in students' work. Turn-it-in is perhaps the best known; however, there is controversy over some of the company's policies. That controversy is explained in the Chronical's article, "Plagiarism-Detection Tool Creates Legal Quandary."
